Basic Requirement for Firearm Possession - 3 hours & self study / R300
According to the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000) all who possess or wish to obtain a firearm in terms of this Act, have to complete the unit standard 117705 - Demonstrate your knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000). This forms an entry requirement for all other firearm courses in South Africa.
Level I: Possession of Firearm
16 hours / from R1000 / ±80 rounds
According to the Firearms Control Act 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000) all who possess or wish to obtain a firearm, have to complete as a minimum criterion the unit standard Handle and use a [handgun /SLRC/MORC/Shotgun]. You can complete this by either attending a full course or by means of recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Defensive Handgun - 8 hours / R450 / ±250 rounds (14 hours / R750 / ±500 rounds)
This is the program you need as a beginner in the defensive use of the handgun, or the experienced shooter in search for an appropriate refresher. An orientation on the range is followed by spending the rest of the day or two working on defensive shooting skills. This is typically a course you should do before attempting Level II programs.
Defensive Revolver - 6 hours / R400 / ±250 rounds
There are many revolvers in circulation in South Africa, and too many people think it is an insignificant firearm. In the hands of a knowledgeable person, it surely is a formidable weapon. This course focuses on the skills required to efficiently and effectively use the revolver defensively. This is typically a course you should do before attempting Level II programs.
Rifle Precision Shooting I (RPS-I) - 8 hours / R550 / max 200 rounds
A rifle was designed for accuracy and many shooters cannot achieve the level of accuracy it inherently possesses. Musketry skills were developed from rifles and the application of these skills will transform any shooter into a sharpshooter. The successful hunt of a prize trophy in the bush, or the elimination of a threat at long range is the issue. This is typically a course you should do before attempting Level II programs.
Defensive Shotgun - 8 hours / R550 / max 220 shots
The pump-action shotgun in 12 gauge is probably the most common shotgun around. Even the side-by-side (S/S) or over-and-under (O/U) break-actions are very efficient firearms and can fire a variety of shots over hunting and defensive distances from 15 to 80 meters. This course will teach you correct handling, loading and rapid firing of the shotgun over various distances to make you proficient with the shotgun in a defensive role. This course will also prepare the active shooter and security officer how to handle this firearm optimally.
Defensive Edged Weapon (DEW) - 3 hours / R450 / FREE Self-Defense Knife
Working with training knives, you will learn the basic types of knife strikes, defensive moves and use of the knife. Next to physical ability, the knife is often the next resort when violent encounters of the close kind occur. You will learn how to use this weapon in the most aggressive manner possible to save a life.
Level II: Intermediate Firearm Training
min 12 hours / R1200 / ± 250 rounds
In future this will be the minimum requirement for armed Security Officers. Here you require a Level I course to continue with any course on this level. Here the focus lies on mastery of the type of firearm with much trigger spent on the range. Make sure you are very familiar with your firearm and equipment.
Tactical Firearm Skills - Handgun - 600 rnds/Rifle - 400 rnds/Shotgun - 250 shots/ min 16 hours / R800
Those who do not wish to complete the full unit standard on Level II (US123511/123514/123515/123519) can opt for this program. The Defensive Course with the specific firearms is a pre-requisite for this course. You might not wish to go all the way to Level III - Demonstrate Tactical Proficiency [with specific firearm], but this course will hone you in the range of tactical skills required on the next level. As is evident in the round count, there is a lot more shooting done in the Tactical Firearm Skills course than in the unit standard alone.
Level III: Advanced Firearm Training
min 24 hours / R1400 / ±450 rounds
Demonstrate Tactical Proficiency [with specific firearm] is the highest level of firearm proficiency according to unit standards. This is the minimum requirement for Cash-in-Transit security personnel. This course will challenge most active shooters and will require good preparation from security personnel who wish to complete this program.
The course member will be required to:
- Demonstrate [firearm specific] techniques
- Demonstrate shooting techniques in a business environment
- Operate a [firearm specific e.g. handgun, rifle] in a controlled, stress induced environment (handgun - 15m, SLRC - 25m, shotgun - 10m)
- Function as a member of a tactical team
Detail of this can be found in the relevant Unit Standard US123513, US123518, and US123512.
